December 13th, 2011 Dennis Mayer | Winter Yard Care

First, install path-marking stakes along any walkway or driveway you intend to clear of snow during the winter. (You can find these at home improvement stores). Whether you use a shovel, a snow blower, or a plow, clearing snow can seriously damage the grassy areas near the path. Marking the walkways before the snow falls will help to minimize that.

The snow may be piling up still, but you can be preparing your garden for spring!  Here are a few more tips from outdoor living expert P. Allen Smith, who has teamed with STIHL:

Put Your Christmas Tree to Good Use for Animals

January 6th, 2009 Patti | Winter Yard Care

Most trees that are sold for Christmas are fir, pine or spruce trees, which all fall under the category of coniferous trees. These kinds of trees can be beneficial to many kinds of wildlife in your area. For example, blue grouse eat the needles from fir trees while quail and songbirds seek shelter in conifers because of the warm air that gets trapped in the branches. Snowshoe hares, deer and elk use conifers to avoid the worst of winter weather as well as to keep themselves hidden from predators.
