Get Rid of Mosquitoes with the Right Kind of Plants

If you are concerned about safety in the environment and you do not wish to cause harm to animals or birds who find their way into your yard and garden area, then it is best to take a natural eco-friendly approach to ridding your yard of those most annoying of creatures- mosquitoes!

How do you accomplish this?

The best thing to do is to plant the right kind of plants that can repel the pesky menaces that can destroy plants and cause a lot of ouch when they bite!
Citronella Grass
Citronella Grass

If citronella sounds familiar, then you probably are used to buying citronella oil to put in lanterns and candles and burning them outdoors in the summer to discourage mosquitoes from bothering you. Citronella grass is what the oil comes. This plant is well suited to tropical areas and can grow as tall as six feet. If you live far from anywhere tropical, then stick with the oil in the warmer months!

Catnip

If you thought catnip was just a fun treat for cats that makes them go a little wacky, then think again! Catnip is an herb that when planted in your yard can repel mosquitoes! It is best to plant catnip as close to your backyard patio as possible.

Marigolds

Marigolds are not just pretty yellow, orange or red flowers. They also have a smell that mosquitoes do not like. Many people don’t like the smell either, so if you plant them, make sure you don’t get your nose too close to them very often! Marigolds are not liked by many types of insects and therefore can help to protect a number of the plants in your garden, and in particular, your vegetable plants.

Rosemary

Rosemary is an herb that, like citronella grass, will work only in tropical climates. If you live where there is a lot of snow in the winter but would like to plant rosemary to repel mosquitoes, then an option to consider is to plant the herb in a pot and grow it indoors during the cold months. You can place the pot outdoors in the summer.

Mosquito Plants

Look online and in your local nurseries for plants that are called mosquito plants. Their function is to discourage mosquitoes from coming around. Some say they work while others say they do not. Buy one, and you be the judge!
