Growing Columbine Flowers

Columbines are perennial flowers that usually bloom during the late spring or early summer.  Unlike many flowers, columbines flourish in minimal sunlight, so don’t feel bad if you can’t find a full-sun spot for your plants.  For a successful start, find a shade spot near trees. Read on for more tips on how you can start your own columbine garden.

1- Chill the Seeds Prior to Planting

Columbine seeds need to be chilled before planting, so they can germinate properly. Make sure you keep the seeds in the fridge for a few weeks before you start planting them. Alternatively, you could plant the seeds in the ground in the fall.

2- Carefully Monitor the Plant’s Water Levels

Pay close attention to your plant as it starts to grow, and be sure to carefully monitor its level of water. Another tip to keep your columbine plant in tip top condition? Apply fertilizer to the soil about once a month in order to maintain color and appearance.

3- Split the Blooms

When your columbine plants start to flourish and outgrow the pot that they were planted in, it’s time to trim back some blooms and space out others. It’s best to space the plants every three years to allow them to spread out and grow. Split them into several different spaces or pots. Continue to water regularly.

4- Keep Diseases and Parasites at Bay

If your flowers are showing signs of diseases or parasites, but you want to use pesticides, use organic-based products.
