Spring is in the Air! Time to Wake Up Your Garden
The thought of spring after a long cold dreary winter is enough to perk most people up. This is especially the case for gardeners and those who take pride in how their yards look. If the thought of bright beautiful flowers in your garden has you pulling on your gardening gloves, then you are one step closer to getting your garden ready to greet the wake up season of spring!
Your lawn may look the worse for wear after the winter has come and gone, but that is to be expected. If there is a great deal of thatch on your lawn, then you will need to get out your rake and remove it before you can attend to the lawn. Thatch is the dead material that resembles straw and can be found tangled up near the roots of your grass. The amount you have can vary from year to year. If you do not get rid of the thatch, then anything you put on the lawn (such as seeds or fertilizer) will not absorb into the soil but will sit on the thatch instead, providing no benefit whatsoever.
Once the lawn has been dethatched, it is then time for the fertilizer. There are many different types of fertilizers on the market. To find the one that is most appropriate for your lawn speak to someone who works at your local garden center and find out what they recommend. Just remember that when you use fertilizer you must read the directions from start to finish, and then do what it says. This is not the time to be creative!
Some years it may be necessary for you to re-seed. This is also called overseeding. Do it if you need, and then move on to planting.
March is an excellent month to do an array of planting. In March you can plant deciduous plants, fruit trees, berries and your beautiful rose bushes. If you are not sure when the best time is to plant a particular plant, then check online for more information. This can vary based on geographical area and climate. If you need to transplant existing plants in your yard, then the sooner you do it the better. Many plants are already starting their annual spring growth, so do not delay! April is just around the corner after all.
