Spring Greens for Salads & More
by Kimberly Hays April 2nd, 2013 Organic Gardening
Those of us who enjoy organic gardening are looking forward to our first taste of fresh vegetables. The first bite we can take from our gardens is lettuce. After planting, the leaves spring up in two weeks time. You can have purslane, arugula, little gems, mizuna, or my favorite, butter lettuce. If you are not familiar with the different flavors, plant a mexclun mix. Mix them with other vegetables for a taste of spring that you just can’t get from a grocery store.

Coffee Can Help Wake Plants Up
by Dennis Mayer February 6th, 2013 Vegetables
A bit before Christmas, I adopted a sad looking clump of basil plants growing in an undersized, crowded pot in the produce section of the local supermarket. The plants are there to be sold "live," much like lobsters. They're not meant to thrive, just to be picked and used fresh. I don't think they're even watered that much; they were rooted in dry, cracking peat. Since I like having fresh basil on hand year round, and I'd neglected to start growing any from seeds for my winter stock, I bought one of the doomed pots, brought it home, and
